Immigration Policy is Not Principally About Immigrants

What's at stake in immigration policy?

I don’t think this is a surprise to long time readers, but I’m on the side of immigrant justice. But the immigration issue is about more than the impact to persons. Immigration policy is about the power we are willing to grant the government to enforce those policies.

While I’d like to see our policies reflect justice, compassion, and welcome, I submit that the central issue involves thinking about longer-term impacts of loosening controls on the government’s ability to detain persons with little transparency or oversight. It is the responsibility of the citizenry to ensure our will is followed, not the will of those in power.
